About This Tour
The Ramayana is an ancient Indian epic that narrates the life of Prince Rama, his wife Sita, and his loyal companion Hanuman. It is traditionally attributed to the sage Valmiki and is divided into seven books. While the main events of the Ramayana take place in mainland India, the epic also mentions the island of Lanka, which is identified with present-day Sri Lanka.
In the Ramayana, Lanka is ruled by the demon king Ravana, who abducts Sita and takes her to his kingdom. This leads to a great war between Rama and his allies, including the monkey-god Hanuman, against Ravana and his demon forces. Eventually, Rama defeats Ravana and rescues Sita, returning to Ayodhya with her.
Sri Lanka, particularly the city of Nuwara Eliya, has been associated with the location of Lanka in the Ramayana. The Ashok Vatika, a garden in the city of Sita Eliya, is believed to be the place where Ravana kept Sita captive. There are various sites across Sri Lanka that are said to be connected to the events of the Ramayana, and these locations are often visited by pilgrims and tourists interested in the epic.
The Ramayana has played a significant role in shaping cultural and religious traditions in Sri Lanka. The epic is not only revered as a sacred text but has also influenced various art forms, literature, and performances in the country. The story of Rama and Sita is particularly important in Hindu traditions, and it continues to be celebrated through festivals and rituals in Sri Lanka.
